I first met my favorite candy back in 2009. I bought a small packet of them at Miette, and didn't realize that they would quickly race to the top of my very favorite things.
I am speaking, of course, of my dear Napoleon bon bons.
Edit: In the comments, somebody asked a very sensible question, which is: "Why are they your favorites?" I should've mentioned - they're my favorites because they're a nice round little shape, and they're a perfectly tart - but not too sour.
Now, there are special occasion or seasonal candies that I really go crazy for (ahem...Cadbury mini-eggs...ahem) and then there is a person's workaday, tried-and-true favorite candy. And having a reliable source of your workaday favorite candy is important.
But although the Napoleon hard candies seem to be as ubiquitous in European countries as the lowly Starlight mint is here, my particular favorites are a little hard to rustle up! A quick Google search will come back with dozens of places selling the Napoleon Sours, which look and seem extremely similar (I've been duped before!) but they're not the same one bit.
The ones I like are the Bon Bon "Fruitmix" variety, and so far, I've only been able to find them here (there are so many intriguing candies on that site.) So rare are they in my life, that discovering an unopened bag stashed away in the back of my cabinet a month or two ago seemed like such a forgotten treasure. Needless to say, if anyone has spotted them elsewhere online or around Portlandtown, please let me know!
I just filled this jar up, and it's looking so pretty, I hardly want to eat them.
But if I know us, that jar'll be running low soon enough!
