UPDATE PART TWO: They're already gone in about 4 minutes! Goodness! And thank you! Wow, I'm amazed.
UPDATE: I just put the kits in the shop, sorry it was a little late for the East Coasters! We have guys working on our kitchen, so we were trying to stay out of their hair...you know how that goes.
The kits are ready for the shop, and I'll be putting them in tomorrow (Thursday) sometime in the afternoon.
Thank you so much for all the excitement and buzz about them!
Several of you asked about the face pieces coming pre-painted, and I did consider it, but there are several reasons why I decided against it. On one hand, I thought that people might like to personalize their own dolls with individual expressions or faces. Also, and I know this from my own experience, but you just can't do the faces before the sewing. It has to be the last step, because so much depends on seam thickness, placement, etc. Doing the faces last is the best way, and that makes providing them in the kits next to impossible. Lastly, I wanted to offer very affordable kits, and hand-painted faces would necessitate them being a bit pricier. Sorry for the lengthy explanation!
Each one comes with completely cut-out doll pieces (100% wool felt hair, cotton muslin face and arms, quilter's cotton legs, and Black Apple fabric dress). In addition, each kit comes with a cute instruction card, and an illustrated insert that lets you know what the kit contains, and what else you will need to gather to make your doll! Each kit is sealed up in a clear sleeve, and a cute little "Black Apple Doll Kit" sticker emblazoning the front.

Those doll patterns are so wonderful!! Cant wait for more to be ready- Id love to make them for my niece!! They are adorable! Hopefully the next batch doesnt get by me

those cuties sell so fast! you are such an inspiration to all of us crafters who just aren't as talented as you!
i had an idea for your next round of dolls for people like me who just can't make a face as cute as you do....and would help in keeping them affordable...what about including iron on fabric faces? i think you could even fit four to a page!! just an idea.

One day I will be swift enough - but they looked spectacular. And thank you for being so considerate with your updates - all those notices, and true thought about the timing, etc - very sweet!

Hi Emily! I want you to see my very favorite doll that I've made from your pattern. She was my 4th to make, and my favorite of all 5 I've made...check her out: http://mommyincolorado.blogspot.com/2008/08/its-so-hard-to-say-goodbye.html
Oh, and how much did you sell the doll kits for? That is a super brilliant idea. :)
Posted by: Erika | October 11, 2008 at 10:04 PM
Yes, these are great! Will you be doing another one soon? Before the holidays? These would make great gifts. Also, can someone say how much they were/are please so I know if I can afford one next time? Thanks so much! Great work Emily!

Wow, I can't believe I missed it. I don't know where the heck I was, I was on the computer all afternoon! I wanted to see them fly off the shelves! Maybe next time I'll be so lucky. Congratulations, Emily.

:( :`( So sad I missed out. Will there be more? Could you do a possible International Applet only section? (heh heh just thought I would ask) Time zones are not my friend when it comes to wanting to purchase your beautiful limited edition works.
Congratulations on your wonderful success!
Cheers

Awww, I missed it! I'm in the UK so Thursday afternoon Portland time was about 8pm - 1am my time. I kept checking until I went to bed.
Oh well I've downloaded the pattern from Martha Stewart but I'm going to have to look very hard to find as cute a fabric!

I'm soooooo excited I got one. Number 2 to be exact. I've already made a couple of dolls from your tutorial, but I really wanted to make one with your fabric. Yippee! Yes, I agree with the other commenter, you should start a flickr group. I would love to see some of the other painted cuties =)
Posted by: Jamie | October 09, 2008 at 09:05 PM
Dang - This midwesterner was in the middle of my commute home when you updated. I will wait for the next round.
P.S. Love your work! I managed to get a doll last year and I am always impressed with what you have up your sleeve.
Posted by: Helen | October 09, 2008 at 08:10 PM
ps... Emily, have you thought of starting a Flickr group for the dolls? That way, people could post pics of their "Martha pattern" dolls, and the ones from these recent kits. I think it would be really quite fun to see how other crafters interpret the pattern, painting of the faces, etc. all in one big happy cyber-picture album ☺

So, we missed the first part of dance class... but was able to get a #1 pink girl before we left! WOOT! Number #2 sold out first, it seemed. My young'un is super-happy ☺
I was quite happy to see that there were 12 of each kit. Great job, E!

Oh, I'm so sad. Watched all afternoon and completely missed out on getting one of these kits. Fascinating to watch all the activity in your shop, though. Congrats!

Ah! They are beautiful I can't wait to sew the two wonderful dolls I got for my two wonderful daughters. What a terrific Christmas present.... Now I need to find some neat fabric to make Halloween costumes :)

This is the first time I've actually seen a doll for sale in your shop, and it was literally gone in the blink of an eye. I try to imagine what you are thinking as you watch your kits fly off the virtual Etsy shelves...I bet everyone who got one is doing a happy dance shrieking "I got one!!" I love the frenzy! Too cool!!
Posted by: Melanie | October 09, 2008 at 07:14 PM

WooHoo! I was refreshing the etsy shop every minute and was lucky enough to be able to get doll number 2 which is exactly the one I wanted. Thanks Emily for the opportunity to create our own little personalized Black Apple Dolls! Can't Wait!

Now the classic question remains... when does afternoon end and evening begin?
...I suppose it matters what time zone you are in. ;-)
Posted by: GirlieGirl | October 09, 2008 at 05:50 PM
well, bribery, maybe. but i'm not opposed to sending thank you treats :O)
Posted by: mrs.deane | October 09, 2008 at 05:46 PM
the suspense is killing me! please, oh please, hurry, emily! i have leave to pick my mother in law up at the airport in twenty minutes!!!
i'm not opposed to bribery!!!

remember that emily's on the west coast now, so if it's 4 p.m. eastern time it's only 1 p.m. where she is!
Posted by: Karley | October 09, 2008 at 04:52 PM
i have been refreshing your blog and etsy ever few minutes since 12! haha its 4:15 now! when will you put up the kits? or make an announcement about it?
:D
Posted by: Nicole Falk | October 09, 2008 at 04:15 PM
Hooray for kits!! So excited!
Posted by: Billie | October 09, 2008 at 03:47 PM
Can't wait they look great, hope I'm lucky enough to get one!
Posted by: Ginie-Lee | October 09, 2008 at 01:24 PM
These are wonderful. I love the instructions that come with it.
Posted by: Momo | October 09, 2008 at 12:18 PM
Your Spoonflower fabric I think will be the big draw with these kits. I love the creeping rabbits... I probably won't make it to the store in time, but I am thrilled that you will undoubtedly sell out in mere minutes.
Oh, and I'm sure you've heard that Johnny Depp has signed on to play the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. You've shared your interest in Alice, so I can imagine you'll be curious (and curiouser!!) to see Burton's eye candy when it opens. I know I am!!
Best wishes for a great day in the Black Apple Shop!!

Maybe you have thought about this (ha - or already have done it), but paper dolls, in addition to these cute kits, would be a great alternative to those that don't sew and great for kids! Just a thought! :)
Posted by: Summer | October 09, 2008 at 11:57 AM
Oooo! I just read someone's comment asking for a Sleepy Sam kit. Not to be too greedy - since you've just released these three great kits - but that would be great, too! I have a nephew and a cousin who would love a little Sleepy Sam of their own. :-)
Posted by: Robin | October 09, 2008 at 11:51 AM
Do you sleep? :) (Meant with the nicest kind of envy.)
Wow. I can't sew, but I have to say, the kits look fun just to play with all the pieces- the cute little cut out hair... like legos, but different.
Yours in admiration! =^.^=
Posted by: katie | October 09, 2008 at 09:24 AM
Wow the excitement is on with much anticipation. I totally understand about the faces, because I have come across the same situation as well. Happy Day, Dawn!
Posted by: Dawn Perry | October 09, 2008 at 08:47 AM
To add to all the face comments, even though I also would feel nervous about drawing my own, I think you, Emily, should keep your faces your own. To me your faces are one of your signatures of your work and should remain done by your own hand:)
Posted by: Tanya | October 09, 2008 at 08:10 AM
Oooh, so sweet... if I'm lucky I'll snaffle one!
Just a thought, but another idea (alongside these adorable kits) could be to have paper patterns available alone, maybe with the face on the template for a guide - I can't be the only person who'd be nervous about doing this part free-hand!?
