Vanilla Lemonade for Friday
I whipped this up a few days ago, and it was so, so, good. In each sip there is first the great tartness of the lemons, and then just after, a mellow vanilla kick. I like my lemonade semi-sweet (but not too sweet) and pulpy, so just keep that in mind and adjust to your heart's desire!
To Make One Reasonably sized pitcher (serves 6-ish):
- Make a simple syrup by stirring together 3/4 c of sugar and 1 c water in a small saucepan on low heat, remove when sugar is dissolved
- Meanwhile, juice about 5 good-sized lemons directly into your pitcher (reserve half your lemon-left-over peels and such)
- Cool the syrup slightly, and then stir together with the concentrated lemon juice. Fill 3/4 of the pitcher with cool water.
- Throw in a teaspoon or so of vanilla and give the whole thing a good stir.
- If you're like me, toss about 1/2 your juiced-lemon wedges back into the pitcher. I love the taste that it gives!
- Serve over tall glasses full to the brim with ice, and take delight in one of the best things about the sweltering Summer...the cold, cold drinks.
- Find a place, preferably grassy, on which to enjoy!
Happy Friday!
PS: Thanks for all that fabric love! What will come of my designs?
Who knows! Doll dresses, zip pouches, quilt squares, etc. I've recieved so many nice emails asking if it will be available for sale...and for right now, I am thinking probably not. The Spoonflower yardage isn't currently affordable enough to turn around and sell it in the shop, and also, I really love the idea of there being some original Black Apple fabric designs to make my dolls + things even more my own specific, unique creation.
However, I would adore to design a line of Black Apple-ish fabric that could be available to you, and if approached, would take them up in millisecond!

mmm... Vanilla lemonade, what a great combination, I will be trying it out tomorrow!

What amazing-sounding lemonade! I really can't wait to try it! Too bad my only pitcher is filled with iced tea...hmmm....is chugging worth it, I wonder...?

Oh, I love lemon/vanilla lemonade. The flavor reminds me of buttercream icing. It's very good with seltzer and vodka too. :)

Ooh yum lemonade! I usually add mint to mine, but I've never tried vanilla. Its happening tonight!
ps I love your work and its a little silly, but I've nominated you for a teensy award on my blog. Check it out if you like:)

The lemonade, delish! (Although I think I poured in a little TOO much vanilla, if there is such a thing!). Got my Hippocampus print today, and besides it being totally wonderous, the new bookmark and business card are terrific as well ♥

"Honey, can you pick some lemons off the tree for me?" It's helpful having a 6'7" man around.
Your fabric looks fantastic!

I'd love to see a tote with the Red Riding Hood fabric! There are o many creative uses for your fabric that you should just keep the fabric for your own creative use. Cant wait to see what you come up with!

Hi Emily!
1)Love this blog and your art.
2)ADORE your shoes.
3)Wanted to try to lemonade recipe, but the grocery store's lemons were kind of anemic looking, so I'll wait for the next produce shipment... disappointed :(
4)If you are on rt 129 this weekend stop by the Pendergrass flea market, cause I'm making a one time appearance there to unload some of my paintings and stuff since I haven't been able to get much business on etsy. You can have a free print (if you'd even want one :P).

I don't know if it's really your thing but i would definately wear a skirt made out of that fabric if you were to fashion some.
Posted by: cs | July 18, 2008 at 08:56 PM
Vanilla in lemonade! That sounds absolutely awesome. :) Yum, can't wait to try this out over the weekend.
Also, I'm so giddy that you two will be moving to PDX. I'll be moving there from Seattle right around the same time (this certainly is the year of grand changes, no?) to further along my artistic pursuits. Perhaps we can meet up for coffee sometime!
Cheers!

As soon as summer rolls around in Australia I will be dusting out the pitcher to have a glass. Please feel free to come around and sit in the sun and share some, perhaps with some cupcakes.
I can totally understand why you would like to keep the fabric for even more special exclusive Black apple creations(as much as I would like to get my fingers on some. My finger is in training for the next update.

Love, love, love the red shoes picture.
Also, am envious, but happy for you regarding your move to Portland. We moved from Salem ten years ago, and still miss Oregon. You are going to have such wonderful time there!

Your new fabric is magical, I can't wait to see what little creations come of them! As for the lemonade, I'll have to wait for a glorious summers day to give it a try and those are a distant memory here in Scotland, so maybe next year :)
Posted by: Laura | July 18, 2008 at 03:48 PM
Yes, those shoes are fantastic.
Hmmm. Vanilla is my favorite flavor, and lemonade one of my favorite beverages, but it never ever occurred to me to mix the two. I am inspired. Thank you.

ps...I know that that although a WONDERFUL option for the artistically gifted (like yourself), the spoonflower fabric is a bit pricey right now. I have seen some of the designers selling their spoonflower fabric for upwards of $15 per fat quarter! Makes for a rather expensive project ;-) Whatever you do with it, it will be wonderful and snatched up within nano-seconds ;-)

Mmmm...sounds so good! I, too, don't like my lemonade too sweet. The best kind of glasses to drink these kind of cold drinks are the vintage, colorful anodized aluminum ones. Makes everything even more frigid :-) A good weekend, to you, my dear ♥R
