This is the capelet that I stitched up especially for the long-anticipated Tom Waits show, which was last night!
It's a little wonky...damn that silk velvet and its wily ways...but it felt just right for a visit to the ramshackle noisemaker himself.
So, the show was insanely good.
There was a carnival-esque showmanship to the whole production that I hadn't expected (I thought might be a bit low-key) and the noisy-quiet-noisy texture of the set-list worked really well and kept all 3 or so hours from ever hitting a lull. Tom stomped around in dust, told lies and yarns and truths, and all the while I kept getting distracted by his looming 30-foot shadow, snaking and creeping around behind him. I lost it about 4 bars into "Hold On" (from Mule Variations), because...um...that song without fail makes me cry on the record, so you can imagine the real-life effect. Later there was a rain-shower of golden glitter, and a magic hat. I suspected from Heidi's post about the Ohio show that there might be an "Innocent When You Dream" sing-along, and there was and it was wonderful.
I can't believe I got to see him.
I love that old bear-in-a-man-suit so.

Wonderful!

Wonderful. I got to see Tom Waits up close at his show in San Francisco in 1977. Yes, his voice can move me to tears also. There is only one Tom Waits.
i Love the art of "The Black Apple",

You are a strikingly pretty woman and you have a way with old school fashion, nice to see. Stay strong and keep going Emily.

wow, what a post. you describe tom waits so well. you make him come alive! he is truly a legend. i had the pleasure once of eating in a thai restaurant in california where he was also eating with his lovely family (i used to live in the region of california where he lives). your capelet is beautiful too. happy day.

Sigh. I wish Tom Waits would come my way, I'd make a capelet as well.
...And cry during Hold On.
Jealous.

How lucky you are ! It's our dream to see him "in real" ! But there's only one concert in France and it's too far from us and too expansive !

I have never heard Tom Waites music, but by the way you always describe him makes me wanna run to youtube!

I might cry with jealousy, you know. It's too long between visits to Australia. But it's only right that you see Tom Waits is something ethereal and beautiful, especially if you've made it yourself, and your cape is just right. Lovely work.

oh I love the capelet it is so beautiful.

Your capelet is amazing... so so pretty, and ultimately classic. I have to say too, that you are just a beautiful person. May sound strange coming from a stranger, but I think that the world would be a better place if we all just said the compliments we are thinking instead of keeping them in... you're incredibly pretty!
Your description of the show is marvelous - I so wish I could have been there to see him. What wonderful memories you made. :)

I know you probably already have (roughly) a gazillion comments saying this exact thing... but that really is an adorable capelet! Would you mind awfully showing us the rest of the outfit that goes with it?
And I dig your embroidery hoop swatch wall in the background! So inspiring :)

Live shows have a way of making me tear up, as well. I thought of you last evening and what a wonderful time you were probably having :-)

oh! oh! don't make it worse! i'm still incredibly sad about the fact that he decided to skip over London for his european tour!

i love the unique techniques (ha..rhymed :) in that cape. any chance you would give some insight into how you make the sweet ruffle?
Posted by: jeanetta | July 06, 2008 at 03:43 PM
how adorable is your cape!? isn't it wonderful seeing a favorite artist live? I saw Sinead O'Connor last October, after seeing her last in 1988 (I'm old!) and I cried like a baby during it, and I'm tearing up now thinking of it!
so glad you had a good time :)

I love Tom! I just saw him in Tulsa and I still can't believe it.I really apprecited the small intimate feel of the show with it being a smaller venue.I didn't have any cute capelets to wear though, just boring old jeans and t-shirts.
Posted by: brannyree | July 06, 2008 at 03:08 PM
Isn't Tom AMAZING LIVE! When I saw him he had the carnival sort of feel to the show as well and I LOVED it. I'm so glad you got to see him and that you had a wonderful time! And you looked cute!!

I like your capelet. I should try with silk to see if I can do something...
Posted by: Marta | July 06, 2008 at 02:00 PM
Silk velvet does has its own mind. Nothing I have ever done with it has turned out right. But you seem to have done well with it. And wonderful color!

Oh what fun! I ended up going to my Aunt's crazy home out in the country. Check out the pictures I took.
