Genevieve Castree/Elverum
I realized that I hadn't posted about comics very much in the last year...which doesn't mean that I haven't been reading them, per se, it's just that I have a hard time finding stuff that I like. And sometimes (as in the case of Genevieve Castree) when I find an artist I like (in this instance, in the Drawn + Quarterly showcase from 2005), it's really difficult for me to get ahold of their work.
She is a musician, also, and has released comics as well as LPs + comic sets. And her work is soooo beautiful to me, and I can't visit a comic shop without inquiring (always in vain) about it.
Her Canadian publisher had this one little book: Roulathèque Roulathèque Nicolore, in stock recently and it came in the mail a week or so ago:
And poking around the web, it looks like she currently has (or maybe just had) an exhibition in NYC of the images from her new book/record set, Tout Seul dans la Forêt en Plein Jour (which I am anxiously awaiting).
Happy Weekend!

(Forgive me if you know this), but Kimya Dawson's sweet little 'i like giants' was written for Genevieve.(Listen here:

After hearing this song about a year ago i searched for Genevieve, fell in love, but also came up empty-handed when trying to get hold of her work. thanks for the reminder.

I love love love love love love love Genevieve Castree! I got quite the crush when I first saw her lovely artwork on a Run Chico Run album many years ago, and then was lucky enough to see her and her husband make the loveliest musics when I lived in Vancouver. They're the nicest sort of people. O loveliness!

If you're looking for amazing comics, check out Kurt Wolfgang. I own "Where Hats Go", and it is achingly sweet and one of my favorite graphic novels.

Genevieve is quite a talented lady! I was lucky enough to see her playing music live a few years ago. You should also check out the music of her husband Phil Elverum, who performs under the monikers Mount Eerie and the Microphones. He is one of my all-time favorites.

I really like the white on black piece, it has a lot of intricate detailing, and has a wonderful warm vintage feel to it. I think when people hear the word, "comic" they automatically think superman, or batman etc, and don't realise their is a whole scope of artists out their working in sequential art.

Thank you for blogging about Genevieve Castree -- I have never seen her work before and having looked through the exhibition stuff I have to say she is a new favourite! Amazing stuff. Very inspiring -- I am off to break out the watercolours.

Her illustrations are so beautiful! I haven't seen her work or heard her music before. Even if Elverum is a small Norwegian town! Not finding her work must be very frustrating! I searched my favorite record store in Oslo and found one item. Have you got this 12" vinyl: http://www.tigernet.no/epages/tiger.sf/no_NO/?ObjectPath=/Shops/Tigernet/Products/119984 It comes with a 60 page comic book. Let me know if you haven't got it and is interested in getting it. I'd be happy to send it overseas to you!
