Some New Paintings

Snow, Rose & Bear 11"x13"x1" Acrylic on wood panel
I want one of my future children's book projects to be a re-illustrating of Snow White & Rose Red, which is one of my favorite fairy tales, and has special significance (because that was what my mom called me and my sister when we were small). That story is so dear to me.
Aaannnd another rabbit painting...
Lepus Creepus 7"x9"x1" Acrylic on wood panel
Sorry to be short on words, but better to be long on pictures (I think).
Happy Weekend, my dears!

Oh, I love "Snow, Rose and Bear" - it just gives me this feeling of security and being taken care of, like when you were little and your mom would hold your head on her lap when you didn't feel well type of thing.
The creeping bunnies are fantastic as well, both in 2D and 3D form :)

The snow white and red rose is lovely!
I really do love the "Lepus Creepus" though, how cute and clever!

Oh wow, I am in love with the Bear painting. I love how soothing it feels. I may have to try to purchase that one!

Hi Emily,
I agree with the above comment about holding your child...I have a photo of Mr Nick holding Sienna just like that, over his shoulder :0)
I hope you pursue the childrens book ambition. As a childrens writer/illustrator myself, I love to see somebody pushing the 'fairy tales' side of things. Even though you would be entering the commercial publishing world of bright colours and "non offensive" (whatever that means),material, I think there is definately a niche for your work. Perhaps you could check out Helen Cooper's work, books including 'Pumpkin Soup' and 'The baby that wouldn't go to bed'.
Good luck with the update, end of ramble from me :0)

Lepus Creepus! He's so wonderful and makes me giggle!!!! Dave and I love fairy tales, we'd definitely buy yours! I love the way you mix the light and bright colors with the dark intimate shadows.

now I want to know if you were snow white or rose red ;) My guess is for snow white, but you never know. And the paintings are absolutely charming.

Ooh, I'm loving the bear painting!! Very nice!

I think it is wonderful that your mother gave you something so sweet. My mother called me beauty but then my sister came along and they named her belle, I felt a little less special at that point. Oh well, still gives me something warm and fuzzy to think about. (Even with my fuzzy hubby beast)

"Snow, Rose & Bear" is lovely, the feeling of the children protected... you got it so right. Reminds me of when I was a kid and used to fall asleep in the car and my dad would take me home to bed. LOVELY!!!!

Hi Emily,
Im loving the new paintings. Just gorgeous. A quick question - I am wanting to make some of your dolls (as seen on Martha) for a charity project here in Oz called Softies for Mirabel. Just wanted to get the ok to use your pattern? More information about the project can be found here: http://flickr.com/groups/softiesformirabel/
Can you let me know if its ok, I'd love to get started ASAP.
Thanks
Libby :)

I really have something with the 'Snow, Rose & Bear' painting, aswell.
My granny called my cousin and me Snow and Rose too, and even planted white and red roses on either side of the porch in her garden, where we used to play alot in summer.
Wonderful times...

I must say I love the scenes and how much of a wonderful transition they are from the portraits. They show your skills much more as an artist.

The bear holding those little girls is so beautiful! Your work is always so lovely and sweet! Can't wait to see all your cuties in the shop :)
Have a great weekend!

I remember hearing the Snow White and Rose Red story while growing up too. It seemed that there were always different versions of it. The bear is so sexy (is that creepy?) but he is the prince enchanted...right?

I very much love this painting, I loved the story too, when I was little, and there is something about the pairing of such a dangerous creature with innocence.

I love that story as well. I had a really big book of fairy stories as a child and they just never leave you.. they capture your imagination so completely.

I loved the story of snow white and Rose red! Love the pantings!

oh I, too, LOVE Snow, Rose & Bear. I do hope to see this available as a print in your shop sometime soon. It has such an expression of gentleness and tenderness to it. Really wonderfully done, Emily!

Snow, Rose & Bear is very reminiscent of Circle Time, too. Loving all your new stuff.
I love that you related the significance of those fairy tale figures to us. Very sweet of you. I would love to see an Emily Martin children's book!

I adore all the old children's storybook illustrators that you do and I can definitely see a little of them in this painting but a whole lot of classic black apple emily. If you were to illustrate a book it would make my christmas shopping so easy because I would buy it for every child and child at heart person I know. Never stop challenging yourself emily, the sky is not even a limit for you !!!!

Snow, Rose & Bear is absolutely stunning.
My sister and I are also opposites in many ways, although neither of us would be deserving of Rose Red/Rose White... Not quite. I wear bright colors, sunshine and happy things and have dirty blonde hair that I dye red. She's more of a night child, dyeing her dark brown hair blue. A rose red with blue hair...

Of course speaking of books makes it very tempting to offer up suggestions as your work is so enjoyable that I personally would love to see it in illustrated book format, sooner rather than later. I'll forgo that and ask a few questions if I may. Because of your love of Snow White and Rose Red I am wondering if you are familiar with or have read the Fables graphic novel series? I think you might find them interesting in their interpretations of the characters as well as their interpretations of faerie in general.
Also looking at your wickedly cool bunnies makes me wonder if you've read Kate DiCamillo's delightful story, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. Although it isn't creepy in any way I do see something of Edward's attitude in your bunnies.
Just curious.

OMG, I loved that story when I was a kid. What a gorgeous pic! And I'm guessing you were Snow White, too. :p

Snow and Rose was also my favourite (I am a uk girl). I was delighted last year when I picked up the very ladybird edition I had as a child in a thrift shop.
It is an old well read copy and the previous owner (Megan) has added her own notes, one of them being on the page where the guardian angel watched over the girls as they slept on a cliff top. In childish scrawl it says "S**t!". This made me giggle as I recall a similar sentiment when I used to read this part as a child.
Im am now a firm beleiver in Angels!

Hey I'm curious as to where you get those wood panels for your painting? They're neat and add a three dimensional quality to your work.

Oh Emily! I think the soft smudgy tone effect is just so poetic. I would love to have some pins or buttons made of those, so I can wear them on my sweater.. as a symbol, a token, a proof and sign that there are many hidden secrets to discover. You're a hunter..!

I would love love love it if you illustrated a children's book! I was just thinking this week after finally buying one of your prints what a fabulous illustrator you would be. I'm a children's librarian and I think your illustrations would be so lovely in picture books...

Ok..I feel out of the loop. I'm quite familiar with Snow White but I've never heard of Rose Red! Is it a generational thing? Did I miss story time at the Library one week as a kid? Fabulous paintings..I'm so happy to see them go in the direction of illustrating a story!

emily, you should totally DO all the snow white and rose red paintings, shop them around to some agents and/or children's book presses, and get them IN a new snow white and rose red. YOU CAN DO IT!! find one of those illustrator's market books and go for it!
Posted by: eileen | May 01, 2008 at 12:00 AM
So, SO incredible perfect...and I have to ask (and please forgive me if this has been addressed before), but what materials/processes do you use to glaze your pieces? They always looks so warm and aged!
Posted by: Alice | May 01, 2008 at 02:34 PM
That painting is absolutely the lovliest little thing I've seen all year. You must work on a book project - can't believe you haven't done one already!
