Lovely Leftovers + Portland Advice

Some_girls_2308
Today we had a very nice light lunch of leftover homemade bread + a potato and chicken soup improvised from one of the soup-making techniques in this excellent soup book. The plates looked so pretty together on the counter, I had to take a photo.

I'm doing as hoped/planned in yesterday's post (drawing/reading/listening), but I thought I'd hop on and ask for some advice. Any Portlander's (the Oregon variety for now) out there, we need some armchair travel agents to represent for their favorite Portland restaurants/shops/haunts. Portland aficionados, feel free to chime in, too of course!
General advice is very appreciated, as well as specific recommendations. We're flying out to that fair city on Friday, and we have this wee book which is full of nice suggestions, but I trust you guys more than that little tome. Are there any particular neighborhoods/areas we should definitely visit? I mean, house-neighborhoods, not just shopping neighborhoods.

I'm excited to hear what you have to say, and am also very excited about our "interview" with Portland.

Happy Monday!

Black Apples for Me

Curiously enough, I received two black apples made just for me in this last week's mail. In light of the strange (and thoughtful!) coincidence, I thought I should share them!

The first is this beautiful miniature painting from Justin, who sent it out of the blue, and enclosed the kindest note.

Blackapple1_2

Thank you so much, Justin! It is just lovely. I am going to have it framed up beautifully in a nice vintage-looking frame as soon as I get a chance, and hang it in a cluster amongst other beloved two dimensional curiosities.

And this little gal arrived yesterday, from Heidi, and you know the timing couldn't have been more perfect:

Blackapple2
See? She's a little plush "black apple"-head!
The photo doesn't do her cuteness justice, but trust me that her little embroidered smile brought me a big one, also.  Heidi, as Wesley Willis might say,  is my buddy in a mix. So is this new applehead.
And that little gocco'ed baker's box she showed up in? Pretty great, too. I'm saving it...I just don't know yet for what.

Here's to a good week coming up!
I want to be mostly making, and listening, and reading and writing. And then traveling.
But first, the other four.

xoxo

New Postcards are here!...

Fandfall

The Flora and Fauna set is now available in the shop. They look beautiful, and make for such a vibrant collection of images!

On a personal note, thank you all so much for all the support I've received over the last few days.
It made all the difference in the world.
I started out trying to thank each of you for your notes of kindness, but the response was so big I eventually accepted defeat with replying to every one. But know that they helped buoy me up...the wonderful stories, openness, advice...all of it was taken to heart and so, so appreciated.

Happy Weekend, everyone! You Applets are an amazing bunch.

No Clever Heading..

Hedgie_2

There are just a few things that need to be said.
One is that I am a very sensitive person, and I have feelings that are fragile and breakable (as most of us have) and I am a very real, very down-to-earth, person. I read each and every comment, and every email, and they affect me. The upshot of this is, that I find myself driven to distraction and sometimes worse when a "firestorm of controversy" happens here, on my personal art/craft blog. I find it difficult to be productive in the instances in which myself or my blog are used as a means for others to "vent". I've resisted comment moderation before, but I am going to begin deleting those comments that I consider inflammatory, unproductive, or personally harmful.

Another thing I want to do is to address the money issue that others have so tactfully broached. I'd like to be clear that the number Martha Stewart announced on her show (explicitly against my wishes) is not a realistic reflection of my business. I don't think that the amount of money that I earn is anyone's concern, and I feel like it's a private matter, but I thought I should clarify the inaccuracy of the claim and also ask that people not use that figure as a stick with which to poke at me.

Lastly, people are entitled to their beliefs and opinions about the nature of inspiration and the nature of plagiarism...however, I think it would be helpful for everyone interested to go pay a visit to official copyright website, which is very extensive and useful. I hold a copyright on the pattern discussed yesterday, as well as the dolls, as both are included in the US copyright office's definition of visual art. There seems to be some confusion about this, but I didn't transfer any of the rights by offering a free pattern for download or by appearing on the Martha show to do a tutorial.  A good analogy is to think about this: does a musician or author relinquish their rights to their song or written work by performing it live on television? Nope. If you were to purchase sheet music for a song, would that grant you the right to record the song and sell it for commercial gain? Nope again.

Inspiration and learning and sharing are vital parts of the creative process, and variations on common ideas are limitless,  which makes the very nature of creative copyright multi-faceted and sticky. However, this much is simple: if an individual sets out to make exact copies of another artist's work for commercial profit, and they haven't explicitly been granted the right to do so, it is irrefutably wrong. Some might ignore or disregard that, but there it is.

Thank you for all of the thoughtful back-and-forth that we share on this blog, and for the feelings of support and kindness that I am given every day. I can never say that enough, and it never goes unappreciated. I want, above all, to preserve that without sacrificing my own well-being.

Love,
Emily

Just in case (re: the Dolls)...

I thought I should make a mini-post about this, since it has come up quite a few times in the last few days. Of course, if you're reading this, there is about a 100% chance you're too considerate to need this clarification. Given that, I just felt like I should get it out there.

Doll

Please keep in mind that the pattern for the dolls featured on Martha is for your private use only. Make them for yourself/your children, make them as gifts, but please don't sell them (or make a teeny change to the pattern/template and then consider it saleable).

I have been so, so thrilled to get all of the emails with wonderful photos of the completed dolls (maybe we should start a flickr group for them?).
They make me so happy!
However, nothing would make me feel worse than, say, an Etsy shop that has opened, and is selling my dolls, or some approximation of them...which I know you understand.
xo

EDIT: To address some of your concerns, let me be clear that I know the dolls aren't groundbreaking...of course not. The shape, the generalities of the structure...all simple, nothing new. I don't labor under the delusion that I invented the ragdoll. What I'm afraid of is copyright infringement: people taking the exact pattern + instructions I designed, drafted and made available and creating exact replicas of my work and profiting from it. Nobody wants to share their ideas (and ideas that they make their livelihood on, might I add) in the spirit of goodwill and have somebody turn around and try to turn a quick buck.
However, I would love it if more people designed and made their own cool cloth dolls (like Fanja's Babettes I've blogged about a few times)...I'd be at the front of the line to buy them! Anybody interested in getting into the doll-business, I say A.) Get out a sketchbook and dream up some cool dolls B.) Make yourself a pattern and C.) Commence to sewin'!

EDIT PART TWO: I have closed comments on this post (for the first time in the history of this blog, actually) because there were too many folks posting multiple comments using psuedonymns, and really, I should've left the comments closed in the first place, but didn't think to. This was intended as a "bulletin", simply making the (common) request that no one use my pattern/template, which is provided on the Martha website, for commercial use.

It's the Little (mostly red) Things...

I thought I'd post about a few recent purchases of little things that are making me very, very happy.
And when I started thinking about it, many of them seem to be red (or reddish)...so we've got kind of a theme going here:

Red1

Beautiful poppy pin from the graceful Etsy shop, Foundling (the equally beautiful image is the seller's own). Very excited about these...I've been eying them for quite a while.
Some_girls_2293
These insanely sweet and Black Apple-ish hairpins from Anthro that I had also been eying for a while.

Some_girls_2294
Also from Anthro, this teacup I had been crazy for, and finally ordered.

Some_girls_2292
Pretty scatter-pins (the least red of the bunch, I'm noticing now) from this quirky-cute Etsy shop.

Red2
And this gocco print, which I find terribly romantic, from the always-right-on Julianna Swaney. I can't keep my dollars in my pocket when I go to her Etsy shop!

Here's to little treasures that make it all so much better!

Post-Easter Candybrain

I'm so glad the new banner is such a hit!
Thanks for all the sweetness, you guys!

But on to the matter at hand: Good grief, there is so. much. candy. in this apartment.
I'm going to ration it out over the next few weeks, so as to not encourage the onset of diabetes.

I hope everyone had a nice spring weekend! We had a really nice little Easter this year...on Saturday, Josiah and I paper mache'd some enormous easter eggs to hold our candy/treats for each other and yesterday, My mom and sister came over for lunch and egg-dying and a good time was had by everybody (I think!). The weather here was just beautiful...I remember so many soggy, grey Easters, and was very relieved by the crisp brightness of yesterday.

On Saturday night, we scoured the neighborhood after our jog for flowering branches to decorate the table with, and they looked so pretty! Sadly, my kitchen has one measly little window, and my photos turned out pretty awfully. The only decent photos are of my Easter pièce de résistance (which is definitely better than nothing!):

Easter2

Eastercupcakes
Oh, good! There is evidence of some of the pretty branches after all!

Some_girls_2279
I made orange cupcakes (orange meaning containing juice and zest) with cream cheese frosting, and they were (and still are) very tasty and Easter-y.

Happy Monday!

PS: Anyone who was jonesin' for print images from the last update (The Terrarium, Button Collector, etc.) all five are now up in the shop.

Flora + Fauna

Flora_and_fauna1

I decided it was high time for a new Black Apple postcard set, so I just sent this collection of 10 cards off to the printers yesterday.

Very excited! I'll let you know when they're here and packaged and available in the shop. Speaking of the shop, thank you for the dazzlingly (and almost frighteningly) good + fast update on Wednesday! Goodness gracious.

As usual, I am so sorry to anyone who really had their heart set on a painting or a doll but the truth is this: I just can't and don't wish to make a jillion dolls or paintings...I want to make a handful of both with regularity, and make them thoughtful and good. And above all, I want to continue to love making both, which for me, means not cranking out 10 dolls a day...because I would grow to resent their pretty little faces. So, I'm doing my best. I don't think there will ever be enough dolls, but there will always be a small gaggle of them available for each new update.

We really worked the whole day through yesterday, packing up the update orders...and it feel very good to know that (almost) all of them are starting their little journeys to their new homes this morning.

Some_girls_2276
Our excellent friend Robert helped us take it all to the Post Office late last night, and I paid him in fries + feta from the diner.

Whew! Well, I've got a few things (fun and un-fun) on my plate for this afternoon, so I'll just leave you with a "Happy Weekend"!

Doll Party!

Doll_sqaure

I'm about to go update the shop...and I have to say, I think it's one of the best updates ever...maybe the best? Above are some of the super-sweet dolls that will be included today (excepting that one in the top-right corner with the black apple dress, she is all mine).

There will also be the limited edition of dolls from the Martha segment, little "mini-Marthas" and "mini-Emilys", tagged with a wee number:

Martha_doll2  Emily_doll2

Hurray! Off to the shop.

Buttons + Bird-babies

Well, here is the completed little lady Miette was attempting to bite the other day (he didn't succeed in his efforts, by the way...the painting is cat-tooth free):

Aaaand another new painting I've been working on with great vim and vigor:

Happy Tuesday, I've got to go ready things for the update tomorrow at 2:00 Eastern (this is the clock I use, if that helps anyone out!).
