Black Apples for Me

Curiously enough, I received two black apples made just for me in this last week's mail. In light of the strange (and thoughtful!) coincidence, I thought I should share them!

The first is this beautiful miniature painting from Justin, who sent it out of the blue, and enclosed the kindest note.

Blackapple1_2

Thank you so much, Justin! It is just lovely. I am going to have it framed up beautifully in a nice vintage-looking frame as soon as I get a chance, and hang it in a cluster amongst other beloved two dimensional curiosities.

And this little gal arrived yesterday, from Heidi, and you know the timing couldn't have been more perfect:

Blackapple2
See? She's a little plush "black apple"-head!
The photo doesn't do her cuteness justice, but trust me that her little embroidered smile brought me a big one, also.  Heidi, as Wesley Willis might say,  is my buddy in a mix. So is this new applehead.
And that little gocco'ed baker's box she showed up in? Pretty great, too. I'm saving it...I just don't know yet for what.

Here's to a good week coming up!
I want to be mostly making, and listening, and reading and writing. And then traveling.
But first, the other four.

xoxo

Comments

Both are lovely.

LOVE the "Black Apple" painting!

I just read a few of your past posts, and see the recent resentment & copycat troubles you've just had. My comment would be to remember the quote by Albert Einstein: 'Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.'

The growing lack of respect for the intellectual property rights of artists is a problem for all of us creatives who earn our living from our original work. Fight the good fight, and don't let them get you down. When last I checked, the fine for willful infringement of copyright is still $150,000. I believe the Artists Copyright Coalition is base in Atlanta. If you need help, they can assist.

HI Emily,

This is my first time writing to your blog, I love your beautiful paintings I could never paint people well so I am amazed. I too love miss Heidi, especially the donuts she makes.

I just wanted to say well said about the last post and I too know full well about copyright since I am in the licensing end of illustration.

I am thinking of joining Etsy and love to hear all the feedback you give about it, thanks!

plug on your stuff just rocks and by the way Martha of all people should have had tack on that subject, you don't see her going out and telling everyone how much she makes!! Way out of line!!

It not only whips a llama's ass, but it whips a llama's ass with a belt!

I usually don't think that highly of fruit paintings, but that black apple is stunning.

On the martha show thing - i love the things she shows on her tv program, but I think that Martha is very tactless sometimes. I think the format of her old tv show (before prison) was a much better match with her personality. Anyway, you were very gracious with her and did a good job presenting how you make dolls. that was very kind of you to share your technique.

You are a sweet and nice person - thank you for blogging.

thanks to for sharing your finds on your fashion blog!

I love both your black apples. Lucky day!

wonderful Artwor you are in my favorite.I call to mind when my grandmother made the doll for me. thank for a happy memory.

Oooohhh I love the black apple painting, I just want to take a bite out of it. I wonder what a black apple taste like, I 'm sure like a apple but is there a slight difference?

Lucky gal getting such cute goodies.

I just got the tea party w/ hedgehog in the mail this morning. It's for my daughter's room, but I love it the most! Thank you!!

I love that painting, wow! And the apple head, so adorable! :)

I've been lurking around here a while, before the Martha appearance. I'm really glad to see all the lovely comments for you on this post and also the cuteness of your Black Applet presents.

It was really awful and shocking to see all that negativity following the M thingie, here's hoping that everything returns to loveliness from now on!

*BIG HUGS*

YOu just rock!

Have you seen the Wesley Willis documentary, "Wesley Willis: Daddy of Rock 'n' Roll"? Highly recommended!

Dear Emily, I missed your last few posts and have just caught up now. Heaps of people have already commented but I just wanted to say how wonderful your work is because it's yours. Thank you so much for sharing your world through your blog. The real thing is always best and can't be copied. Don't let bad eggs get to you, there's many more good eggs supporting you :) Rebecca

I love your work. Everything you make is full of soul.

Sweet apples :)

The AppleHead...cute!

Hiya, I saw you on Martha, which is great cuz I actually saw your dolls a while ago, and loved them, but didn't know who makes them or where to find them! Anyway, you mentioned that you just started knitting, and I wondered if you knew about www.ravelry.com - it's a knit and crochet community, with more awesomeness than a girl could fit in a single post! Check it out. Happy knitting and crafting, and thank you for the inspiration!
