Found frames, and the girls who came to live in them...
I found some really cool thrifted frames/surfaces recently, and they were just right for mutating to my own purposes (that is, to paint them/paint IN them).
Coney Island Baby 9"x11"x1.5" Acrylic on board
(dimensions included permanent vintage frame, which is hand-painted and distressed)
and...
Miss Littlehat 7"x10"x1" Acrylic on wood panel/permanently affixed frame
I've had a longstanding, irrational hatred of women in top-hats (it crushed me whenever some artist would plop one on Death from The Sandman Series). Recently, I've decided that as much as I despise regularly-sized top-hats on ladies, proportionately to the opposite degree, I love a lady in a tiny top-hat.
PS: The only exception to the no-ladies-in-top-hats rule is Joanie Stubbs from Deadwood.
Happy Sunday everyone! I'll be back with dollies (hopefully) tomorrow.

Acrylics on wood panels are awesome! Love the rounded frame for miss littlehat.

Those frames are just what the doctor ordered... if he had little pictures, and had to order a frame that is. ;)

Yes, Emily, I'm starting to worry that we haven't heard from you in a few days--are you OK?
Posted by: moya | August 30, 2007 at 04:05 PM
kirsty - laugh! I'm glad I'm not the only stalker.
everything okay on your end, darling miss blackapple? Not that I demand you post everyday! You've just been quiet this week. I get to wondering. And worrying (just a little!). And hoping that all is well and perhaps you are just busy busy busy at blackapple cottage...

am really enjoying all that you create - as for top hats, i guess as a costumer i am a big fan of the top hat on women, specifically Death - though i was more of a fan of her walking out of the painting in???? Seasons of the mists? was it that one? oh too long ago to remember..but that was my costume for halloween 16 (yikes) years ago.

I have to say this is where we differ, I love a woman in a top hat...could that be because I used to be a magician's assistant...perhaps, but I think it is moistly tied to (comic book character) Zatanna....and yes, Death, there were a couple years in high school when I was obsessed with all things Sandman (who am I kidding, I still am), Drunkenly at a comic convention after party I made someone call Neil Gaiman...we only got his voicemail.

I'm glad to see you made an exception for Ms. Stubbs or else I was going to have to object! But yeah. There really is no reason for women to wear tophats most of the time.

dude...I hate top hats on women, nothing irrational about it. I think on men too for that matter. UNLESS it's in the olden times. I didn't know I liked tiny top hats on women until this entry though. That's adorable! The paintings are rad. Strong, sophisticated color ~very nice.

These are wonderful!!!

oh dear, how aborable Miss Littlehat. I feel compelled to be the highest bidder, yet I don't even see her on you etsy sight. Is she already gone, or merely not posted yet. Ah zut! Well I will keep my eyes peeled. And yes I have a special place in my heart for Mini Tophats or mini toppers as I like to refer to them, they are the most perfect accent to just the right costuming.

God, they're beautiful! I wish I could make such things... And the colour of the blue frame is hypnotisingly beautiful. I love that colour with my red hair. Gorgeous!

love them both!

My my my, I cannot wrap my brain around how wonderful your work is! The Coney Island girl looks perfect with that frame.
Must. Read. Sandman. Frankly, I'm surprised I have never read the series, as Josiah and I are great comic book fans/collectors.

that first pic looks just like your picture in your bio....your girls look a lot like you....which I find quite often artists do, they make people who look similar to themselves, from carvers to painters....interesting.......

They are beautiful! Your paintings suit those frames so well.
Posted by: Catherine | August 27, 2007 at 04:34 AM
oh, and I posted a pic on my own blog, if you're curious! It's a digression/distraction from that big piece that I STILL haven't finished (argh).
Posted by: sarah | August 27, 2007 at 02:20 AM
oh, I love top hats. But they must be paired with a suitably costumey garment. =) But that's neither here nor there. These are adorable. I particularly like Miss Coney Island Baby's headgear, I must say.
And I'm hanging onto an old frame for just this purpose. And I spent the afternoon painting in acrylics on a raw wood panel. Were we separated at birth, Emily? =)

I love your stuff! I can't wait until Tuesday. I have your Bubble Gum betty and am now looking to purchase a red head photo and a blonde. I have three daughters one of each hair color and I want them each to have their own. Keep it up--you are super talented.

I agree completely about tiny top hats! Although everything in miniature form is okay with me.
ps- Coney Island Baby is probably my favourite painting of yours ever!
