So making my living room into a tiny scrap of forest did end up being last night's project!
I know my trees are much different and more spindly than the Mary Blair-ish ones I linked yesterday, but that's how I like my trees. Nice and spindly.
Here's another image that is more just-the-trees:
I really love how my paper lantern looks so much like the moon over the trees! That was purely happy coincidence. You also get to see my funny, candy-striped couch there. There were 3 couches at the thrift store the week I moved in. This was the only one that fit my aesthetic (in a kind of silly way) and was in good shape, comfy, and clean.
Today I am working on the studio, and listening to a hilariously varied smattering of NPR podcasts, including one on Bigfoot, one from the wonderful Christopher Guest (chatting about his new film, "For your Consideration", which I for some reason keep calling "Thank you for your consideration") and a little show/interview with The Knitters from last year. The ol' workroom is starting to really shape up, and feel like a place I want to be in all the time, rather than just a place to work at my computer while staring around at the intimidating, tomato-ish walls. Maybe in a few days I'll feel like it's ready to show off?
In Etsy news, it's officially launched, but is (as I both feared and predicted) littered with bugs and glitches, and at this point in time, I'm not even able to view the site. Hmmm... I really appreciate all that the Etsy guys do, really. I really do. But I also question their timing in launching a completely new version of the site in mid-November, when everyone needs to be a-buyin' things.

Oh, that's so cute. You did that yourself? It looks so great! I was going to get someone to do one for me.

Ack! My darling miss emily! Your walls are so delightful!
WE really need to have some din dins and chitter chat. Not enough of that is going around.
Now that our kitty is a little better we are more free to move about. Call when you're free-ish!!!

I am totally with you on the timing. I too appreciate their hard work but why oh why did they choose to launch this during PEAK buying season?????? I adore your painted trees and your new place is gorgeous. xo

The trees are fantastic! I've just come upon your blog recently and love reading about the creative life you lead. Thanks for letting us take a peek inside (the black apple).

I love this room! The moon, the trees...GOOD GRIEF! There I said it.
Do you know if the # of view feature on etsy is working. I listed something yesterday and today and both have had only one view. Which seems wrong...even for me. So I thought how can I know for sure...check your store. Looked like your new stuff only had 1 view also. And that can't be right!

Your trees are amazing! And I just LOVE the glow of the "moon." I've been wanting to paint my "studio" (it's what I call my tiny bit of space amongst all the toys in the basement). You're such an inspiration, and you might even help me to step out of my very predictable box. Thanks!!

I love your new apartment, the trees are gorgeous. Have you got any room for me to move in? Or could you come and decorate my house for me? You are so talented. xxx

Oooo, so pwetty! I wish I have a new apartment to play with!

Hi there! I love looking at the pictures of your new apartment. (I'm not going to lie - I'm a bit jealous. hehe.) And I think your couch looks very sweet.
I have two questions for you: Where do you find all those beautiful frames? Thrift stores? I love them; they've got so much personality and charm.
And secondly, do you do custom art? I adore "The Little Match Girl" by Hans Christian Andersen. (It's so beautiful and sad and bittersweet.) And it occurred to me that your style (and personality, it would seem) would be perfect for a picture based on the story. :) Let me know if you do custom art and what you might charge for that sort of thing. (Poor college student = enough said.)
:)

Good grief it's all so beautiful! Great job!
And I was wondering the exact same thing about that stuff going on at Etsy. Bad timing for sure.

Love the walls! The color and the trees.
I can't view your shop right now, which really bites. How am I supposed to complete my Christmas wish list??
Posted by: persephone | November 14, 2006 at 09:16 PM
Aww, I'm sorry you can't get onto Etsy. A few people are having that problem. I'm pretty sure they said they are doing the update now because they wouldn't be able to handle the rush of holiday shoppers without putting it up. I think they wanted to do it earlier, but this is the soonest they could get everything ready.
I love the trees. I can't wait to live in a place I can paint!
Posted by: Tiffany | November 14, 2006 at 08:38 PM
Wow, this is really nice. I saw something like this in a magazine recently (except the tree wasn't as beautiful and spindly as yours) and have meant to do it on my hall cupboard doors - you might just have inspired me to actually getting around to doing it. Lovely room - and I adore the beautiful couch!

Dazzling! Dazzling! Dazzling! My goodness! I am just so excited to visit here daily...to see all of these incredibly magical bits you share!
This vignette is just so so perfect!! I too expect to see one of your girls lost in a book...or conversing with a hedgehog or bunny! So lovely!! You need a cockoo clock!!
Do you display your originals?
Adore adore adore your couch! It really sets everything off!..just the right amount of "sweet"!
Ohh.. did you get my Etsy order from this morning? let me know..Feel free to send an invoice!
Happy Decorating!

Oh, the trees are fantastic! I can't wait to see them in person and eat what ever delicious emily-gourmet meal awaits me... Will you come paint some trees in my house?
p.s. Try not to fret about Etsy toom much... I think it will all be ok in the end!
Posted by: sara k. | November 14, 2006 at 06:22 PM
Your Trees are wonderful! You are renting too, aren't you? So are we! If I decided to paint the walls we would be in the bigggest trouble. In the land of Oz we are not allowed to do anything to our rented houses and apartments. Putting pictures up is a problem sometimes. You are so lucky!!! I just look forward to owning my own home one day and painting galore!!!!

I just love your trees, I wish I could do something like that to my apartment, but I am even afarid to put a nail in the wall. i just don't want to repaint. It looks fantastic in the photos!
Posted by: Jessica | November 14, 2006 at 05:13 PM
ooh, thanks for the Knitters link -- I just saw John Doe play on Saturday, so perfect timing.
the trees, they're amazing. love!

I agree with you on etsyv2.....this was the wrong time! also I somewhat feel like if it wasn't broken why fix it. I really liked the old version and it only needed a couple of tweaks not a complete revamp(at least at this time) that is bound to confuse buyers and customers alike. Boo! Your house is looking great, I love the goose head :)
Posted by: Danielle | November 14, 2006 at 04:43 PM
Absolutely perfect living room. I too saw the moon/lantern right away. The pillow on the right is just the right color/pattern to balance out the trees. It's *so* Emily!
Posted by: futuregirl | November 14, 2006 at 04:23 PM
oh my crap, that is so cool! i've always wanted to paint something on the walls like that but never have. you did such a lovely job!
Posted by: Jennifer | November 14, 2006 at 04:07 PM
Oooh, they're magical. So happy to see you settling in and nesting in your wonderful, spacious new place. It couldn't be more charming, quirky, wonderful, more you. Well done. Wish the blackapple shop sold giant decals of these spindly trees for all our walls...
Posted by: karaalison | November 14, 2006 at 04:04 PM
You are so correct, you lantern does look like the moon over your cute little trees. It turned out wonderful, and I cannot wait to see your studio.
I need to get on NPR and see if they have this one segment on podcast.. it was about an intern and her cocker spaniel that was addicted to drugs, well, toad sucking. it was the most hilarious thing I have ever heard, but I do need to listen to the one about bigfoot too.

Love your art too! :)

Hi Emily! I wish to say that in the past few weeks I've read your blog nearly every day. I enjoy your artwork and spice of life so much, and I hope you keep blogging because I love to read your blogs. Nice to meet you here!
Posted by: Erika | November 14, 2006 at 02:52 PM
whoah nelly- you are fast! i've lived in my house for many, many years & it's not half as put together as your new place! the trees look great- perfect in fact. i keep expecting one of your girls or a hedgie to appear. i agree about etsy- the timing seems a little odd, but i guess they had a burning desire to upgrade.
Posted by: Hildy | November 14, 2006 at 02:12 PM
simply gorgeous! the trees are such a great touch to an already cozy looking place! i LOVE your couch!!!
i know, v2 is a bit haphazard so far. not sure if i am totally thrilled with the new look, but hopefully things will be working more easily soon!
looking forward to seeing photos of your studio!

Ooooohhh, ooooohh, oooh! I love your new apartment, I love your new furniture, I love your couch, I love your walls and the paper lantern! I feel so voyeuristic (of course, that is what blogs allow us to be), but thank you for sharing, because I am feeling extra inspired by all the things you are doing in your living space. Delightful eye candy.

Strange how much the word "divine" just came up in your comments.
I just wanted to let you know that I'm here, sneaking around your back alleys, reading you. I suppose it's mandatory, now that we're not living overlapping lives.
You feel far away today.

Where did you get that divine coffee table?
Posted by: KiWi | November 14, 2006 at 01:44 PM
how lovely it all is - those trees are divine under the glow of the lantern. and that's a thrifted couch??? it's an extra layer of sweet icing in your home. enjoy your new and restorative digs, emily.
